The Social Circle Boys Basketball team defeated visiting region rival, Oglethorpe County, in heated contest Friday night.
It was all Patriots early, as the visitors jumped out to an early 21-14 lead after the first quarter. The Redskins remained in it thanks to great play by sophomore All-Region guard KJ Reid, who poured in 10 points.
The Redskins rallied in the second quarter behind Reid and fellow sophomore guard, Tyrhell Branch, combining for 15 of Social Circle’s 26 2nd quarter points. Sophomore guard Cam Gaither had 7 points of his own in the quarter. Social Circle took a 40-30 halftime lead.
Oglethorpe County fought back in the third, benefiting from sloppy decision making by the home team. Foul trouble also plagued the Redskins, as Social Circle had to play the majority of the quarter sans Branch. The Patriots cut the lead to 5 heading into the final frame, 51-46.
However, it was a foul-fest for the Patriots in the fourth. Oglethorpe County, in a pressing man-to-man defense the entire night, had 18 2nd half fouls. The Redskins did not score a field goal in the 4th but made 19 free throws, putting the region rival away, 70-61.
The Redskins move to 11-4 on the season and 4-0 in Region 8-AA, currently tied for 1st place with Banks Co. Social Circle travels to Elbert Co tomorrow night for a 5:30 tip in another region matchup, this time against the Blue Devils.
